Perpetuity is a work commissioned by the renowned Scottish Ensemble, a string ensemble celebrated for their ability to breathe life into contemporary compositions with depth and precision. This piece explores the concept of endless continuity – the timeless expanse of the cosmos and the perpetual cycles that define both the universe and the human experience.

The electronic component, composed entirely of sine tones tuned to prime frequencies, creates a harmonic foundation that feels both ancient and futuristic. These pure tones weave in and out of the live string textures, grounding the ensemble’s sound with a meditative resonance. The use of prime tones adds an elemental quality, suggesting something fundamental and eternal within the fabric of the music, much like the unchanging stars in a vast sky.

Throughout the piece, the strings engage in a dialogue with the electronics, building and releasing tension in waves that seem to echo the rhythmic cycles of the cosmos itself. Melodic lines emerge and dissolve, interweaving with the sine tones to form a soundscape that is at once serene and profound, inviting the listener to reflect on the concept of infinity and the mysteries that lie beyond.
