Solitude quartet

2023

Solitude was inspired by the difficulties and suspended state of uncertainty that emerged during the pandemic. The music takes the listener through three fictional spheres, reflecting moments seemingly “frozen” in time and different emotional states.

The opening of the work evokes the torment of repetitive days, conveyed through recurring rhythmic motifs. The musical material of the first section suggests the persistent monotony of everyday life, chaos and information overload, as well as the constant changes that can leave us feeling lost and overwhelmed.

As the quartet unfolds, melodic passages saturated with melancholy emerge, while retaining a sense of unease. These gradually lead towards a more sensual and fluid sound world, symbolising hope and the possibility of overcoming difficult circumstances. The melodic element reflects our longing to escape reality and our search for peace. In the third section, the emotional intensity reaches its culmination, opening onto a vision of a hopeful future.

Through shifting dynamics, timbral colours and expressive qualities, I sought to evoke the range of emotions and experiences that accompanied us during the pandemic, from moments of crisis to those filled with hope. The string quartet acts as a guide, leading the listener through the three spheres, which intersect and permeate one another to form a coherent musical narrative.

Solitude invites the listener to experience different emotional states while reflecting on the impact of the pandemic on human existence. It is a musical tribute to everyone who endured the hardships of the pandemic, and at the same time an expression of hope for a better tomorrow.
