Testing the Waters — The Values of Artistic Practices for Societal Challenges

Martijn de Waal, Marleen Idema, Elioa Steffen, Kasia Głowicka, Bruno Neves Alves, Nanda van der Weiden and Jaz Hee-jeong Choi

Book

How can artistic methods contribute to research and innovation without losing the qualities that make them artistic in the first place?

The publication gathers what researchers and teachers across the CoECI network see as the real strengths of artistic practice — exploratory, agenda-setting, iterative, situated, embodied — and where those strengths run into the goal-oriented habits of innovation funding. It was written as CLICKNL’s Ontwerpkracht and Key Enabling Methodologies agendas, the New European Bauhaus and the NWA’s Kunst route were all turning toward the arts at once.

Launched on 3 March 2025 at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, CoECI’s partner institution.
