Solitude Quartet (2021)
Composed by Katarzyna Głowicka

Solitude Quartet is an expressive and multi-layered composition, premiered by the Silesian String Quartet and vocalist Iga Kozacka. Commissioned by NOSPR, this piece is a reflection of the pandemic period and the suspended state of existence it brought, immersing listeners in three distinct emotional realms – frozen moments of introspection and longing.

The work opens with the solo string section in Inferno (Piekło), a movement characterized by rhythmic repetition that evokes the torment of days blending into one another. The piece then transitions to Cleansing (Oczyszczenie), where the music shifts, incorporating a voice that echoes themes of purification and resilience. In this section, the music alternates between English and Polish to enhance the aural texture, matching the nuances of language to the musical narrative.

The final movement, Absolution (Rozgrzeszenie), culminates in an emotionally charged journey, blending acoustic and electroacoustic elements to illustrate a catharsis that is both personal and collective. The movement captures the perseverance and the longing for resolution, concluding with a powerful portrayal of release and acceptance.

Originally planned for a 2021 premiere but delayed due to the pandemic, Solitude Quartet is dedication to the Silesian String Quartet. Premiered at NOSPR, Katowice, Poland  during by Silesian String Quartet and Iga Kozacka

Fragment part 1: Inferno

Fragment part 2: Cleansing

Fragment part 3: Absolution

Część 1/Part 1

Inferno (Piekło)

Dzień, noc, noc, dzień

zamknięta, zamknięty, zamknięci, przeklęci

Dzień, noc, noc, dzień

dzień, dzień, cień, sen…

jeden, dwa, pięć, osiem,

dziesięć, tysiąc…

Część 2/Part 2

Cleansing (Oczyszczenie)

Day night, night day, no light

Sunrise, red crown, stale sight

One hug, two hearts, three months

Ten days waiting no spike

And all traces and all filth must be cleansed

Endless hug-less morning light –

I wipe my teared drenched mind

And mask it with a smile

Pink filter for the curse

Zostań, zostań serce moje

Nie dotykaj nieczyszczonych

Niedomytych moich myśli

Niech mój oddech ci się przyśni

Niech Twa przestrzeń dotknie mojej

Oczyszczonej, oddalonej

Odkażonej, wydzielonej

One hug, two hearts,

No smile

I’m alive

Część 3/ Part 3

Absolution (Rozgrzeszenie)

I’ve been holding for so long

Longer than the longest dream

Satellites around my head

made a thousand lonely trips

I’m reciting close to heart

voice of yours

that fever dream

with high pitch and lower laughs

softer squeak and harsher scream

And I know voice of yours

Hopeful and deserted longing

I grip the meanings

When finally

with no sense

I carry on waiting

with no end

Recytuję serca rytm

Twoim głosem pulsu dźwięk

Ton wysoki niższy śmiech

Miękka nuta ostry krzyk

Łapię krótkie końce znaczeń

Nie puszczę, czekam

Ileż mogę wiernie Trwać?!

When finally comes

when finally comes

Absolution

And finally comes

when finally comes

Absolution

I climb and

I grip the meaning

with no hope

I carry on wait for some faith

With no end
