Solitude Quartet (2021) Composed by Katarzyna Głowicka
Solitude Quartet is an expressive and multi-layered composition, premiered by the Silesian String Quartet and vocalist Iga Kozacka. Commissioned by NOSPR, this piece is a reflection of the pandemic period and the suspended state of existence it brought, immersing listeners in three distinct emotional realms – frozen moments of introspection and longing.
The work opens with the solo string section in Inferno (Piekło), a movement characterized by rhythmic repetition that evokes the torment of days blending into one another. The piece then transitions to Cleansing (Oczyszczenie), where the music shifts, incorporating a voice that echoes themes of purification and resilience. In this section, the music alternates between English and Polish to enhance the aural texture, matching the nuances of language to the musical narrative.
The final movement, Absolution (Rozgrzeszenie), culminates in an emotionally charged journey, blending acoustic and electroacoustic elements to illustrate a catharsis that is both personal and collective. The movement captures the perseverance and the longing for resolution, concluding with a powerful portrayal of release and acceptance.
Originally planned for a 2021 premiere but delayed due to the pandemic, Solitude Quartet is dedication to the Silesian String Quartet. Premiered at NOSPR, Katowice, Poland during by Silesian String Quartet and Iga Kozacka.
