Sync” is a short movie about synchronicity. Commissioned by Foundation M31 . Premiered during Cine Dans Festival 2021.

SYNC connects dancers scattered across the globe, exploring the boundary between coincidence and compulsion.

This short film, created in response to the global pandemic, features a cast of ten dancers from eight countries across seven time zones. Each dancer self-shot their performance, creating a raw, intimate portrayal of isolation and unity. “You think about someone, and suddenly they call you. It feels like telepathy. Is that coincidence or synchronicity? That question always fascinated me, and once I started to look for it, I saw it everywhere,” explains SYNC director Robin Coops.

SYNC draws on natural phenomena—flocks of birds, molecular patterns, and musical harmony—to depict moments when elements fall into perfect sync. “Despite the separation caused by the pandemic, we’re all building a collective memory. That’s the inspiration for SYNC,” says Coops.

Choreographed by Pim Veulings, SYNC brings the dispersed dancers into moments of synchronicity through a captivating score by composer Kasia Głowicka. These synchronizations are fleeting; as the music fades, the dancers return to their individual rhythms. “To me, this is like quantum physics,” Głowicka reflects. “Thoughts are physical, chemical—there’s a scientific element; it’s not just mystical. The film feels physical: it’s about pulsation and vibration, physically separated people being drawn together by the same force.”

Originally planned to be shot in the Netherlands, the pandemic forced the team to adapt, with Coops and Veulings directing and choreographing remotely from across the world. “In a way, that made it more real—a true co-creation. It was brave for them and brave for us,” says Coops.
